What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing which is why we shorten it to EMDR.
It is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.
Pioneered by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980's, it has proved over the years to further help with anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.
EMDR uses a 3-pronged approach:
Exploring past events that have been the groundwork for dysfunction and processing these events with positive adaptations.
Exploring the current circumstances that draw out distress and internal/external triggers that become desensitized.
Further, future images are used to assist the client in acquiring the skills needed for change or adaptive functioning.
EMDR has proved to be a very effective form of trauma therapy.
It can also be accomplished in less time than other forms of therapy.
A good resource for anyone wanting more information about the therapy is the EMDR Institute.
This is where I received my training nearly 10 years ago presented by the Institute in Dallas, TX.
“Changing memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others; therefore our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or able to resist, all move in a positive direction."
— Dr. Shapiro
